The Bald Eagle Defies Extinction
After fears that the national symbol of the United States, the bald eagle, would soon be extinct, the bird is now well on its way to recovery. Experts realized in 1940 that the species had become endangered, and a law was passed to offer it protection from hunters- the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. DDT offered another threat to the survival of the bald eagle, and continued to feed the decline in numbers after the birds were no longer hunted. When the number reached just 417 breeding pairs in 1963, action was called for and in 1973 the species was put on the newly created endangered species list.Instead of extinction, the bald eagle has dramatically reversed its declining numbers. Today nearly 10,000 pairs of bald eagles roam the U.S., which is enough to get the species removed from the protection of the endangered species list. The birds will not be abandoned by wildlife experts, however. For at least the next five years experts will be tracking number numbers of breeding pairs. If the number of eagles begins to fall, the species can again be placed under the protection of the endangered species list.
Bald eagles still enjoy legal protection from the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, even if they are no longer endangered. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918 has offers still more protection to the bald eagle. This act made hunting the bald eagle, as well as other migratory birds, illegal in the United States and in certain other countries. For eagles that make their way into Canada or Mexico, the treaty is in effect in those countries to stop the trade of eagle feathers, eggs and other parts that could make the hunting of eagles lucrative.
The 1972 ban on the use of DDT has also done much to protect bald eagles. DDT traveled up the food chain to the bald eagle, and other animals, causing a steep decline in the number of breeding pairs. This pesticide spread from fields to waterways and then to eagles. Bald eagles ate fish caught from the contaminated waters. Eagles that were contaminated could not produce the strong eggshells needed to sustain eagle embryos. DDT devastated the bald eagle population, as mother eagles were unable to incubate the thin eggs, often cracking them in the nest. Today, with DDT largely gone from natural bodies of water, bald eagles have every chance to reproduce and grow in numbers.
